How to Green Your Home in 3 Easy Steps

Updated: Sep 27, 2019

Read on for Philippa's top 3 tips to "green" your home and workspace...

Philippa Settels is the owner of B Green, and the Canadian Division Director of the Institute for Green Business Certification.

B Green, originally known as Green Leaf Consulting, was created by Philippa Settels and offers consulting services in various aspects of green living and sustainability. She also offers green training and certification for businesses.

Living a healthy, green life has been her passion for over three decades and especially after having children. Philippa healed holistically from Crohn's disease in her mid-teens following a near death experience from conventional medical treatment, and then shortly after her second child was born, was misdiagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis; symptoms were due to several environmental factors, including mercury poisoning!

Her expertise is based on decades of experience and extensive research in eliminating exposure to toxic, illness-causing chemicals found in everyday products commonly used in our homes, on our bodies and in our food.

Philippa offers various environmental consulting services by empowering people, communities and businesses on a local and global scale towards a more healthy, holistic, sustainable and regenerative future.

I first met Philippa Settels around 2000, at the turn of the millennium. Even then, I was struck by her passion for natural and healthy living. This was long before I would start my journey into homeopathy, reiki, and other energy modalities.

Philippa’s zest for natural health spreads to everyone around her. Her vivacity and vibrancy are a true testament to the benefits of healthy living!

Philippa virtually cured herself from a life endangering case of Crohn’s that came with multiple complications. She did this by doubling down on natural foods and supplements, educating herself, researching, and eventually clearing her spaces and body and “greening” her home.

It took her decades of study – and she eventually followed her passion to offer green training and certifications through her company bgreen.

If you're feeling the urge to declutter and replace all the toxic chemicals in your spaces with much healthier and greener alternatives, below is an interview with this lovely earth-angel and her top 3 steps to get green.

At the bottom, you'll find a FREE downloadable PDF with best recommended organic, eco friendly and cruelty free products.

Welcome Philippa! How would you describe your green consulting business?

It is a labor of love really. Following my passion for helping people and the planet live healthier and happier lives.

Can you tell us a little about your green services?

I aim to help people live a healthy and toxin-free life by educating them on the importance of eliminating illness-causing chemicals found in their homes, bodies and food, and replacing them with more natural and healthier alternatives.

Who's your ideal client?

Anyone willing to make a change and invest in their own health, the health of their families, workplace, communities, and the environment.

What sort of results will clients see after going through green sessions with you, and how might it affect their immediate environment?

Often times, chronic headaches and/or allergies/breathing issues are completely eliminated shortly after implementing my Going Green plan, as people’s air quality improves 100%.

Is there a lot of work involved?

It really depends on how people choose to look at it and their willingness to make changes. I take everyone’s personal path into consideration and therefore custom-build a step-by-step Going Green plan suited for each individual, and their own specific needs.

Sweet. What's your best Success tip?

Letting go… and aligning with your heart!

What's your favorite thing to do to get into a positive frame of mind?

Dancing and singing at the top of my lungs! (in a most non-professional way!!!)

What advice would you like to share with someone working towards their dreams and goals?

"Everything you want is on the other side of fear…" so ask fear to step aside and just GO for it! Embrace yourself and your journey, every step of the way, and be your own biggest fan. The world has enough critics already!

Who is one of your biggest inspirations?

Dr. David Suzuki. Ever since I was a little girl, I watched him host The Nature of Things on CBC, like many millions of Canadians. I’ve always been inspired by his love for Mother Nature and his devotion towards environmental protection and conservation.

Here’s a fun story about manifesting…On November 29th, 2015 (almost 5 years to the day since I founded Green Leaf Consulting) I attended the "100% Possible - Marching for Climate Solutions and Justice" on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Canada on the eve of the Paris Climate Summit. On the morning of the march, as I was getting ready to leave Montreal with a dear friend, I told myself that if I came face to face with Dr. Suzuki, I would shake his hand to thank him for being such a fundamental inspiration for my passion-based lifestyle and business, and for all that he has done for Canadians.

Philippa Settels & David Suzuki

My friend and I took a detour and missed the opening ceremony, where David Suzuki was one of the guest speakers, so we joined the marchers a little later on. As we stood waiting on a street corner, my eyes quickly scanned the first row of approaching marchers in the hopes of seeing Dr. Suzuki. He was nowhere in sight. We let several rows of people go by and then we joined in. Out of the blue, my friend grabbed my arm and said to me: "Look over your shoulder!" To my right, there stood Dr. David Suzuki in the flesh!!! I turned and shook the hand of one of my greatest heroes, and thanked him for all that he has done!!!

What's your latest and most exciting green service offering?

I am toying with the idea of putting together an online Going Green workshop/course, to expand my reach and help even more people live healthier and happier lives.

What, in your opinion, is one of the most exciting upcoming innovations for the environment?

One of the most exciting innovative eco-solutions that I have been following is Boyan Slat's 'Ocean Cleanup'. He's a young Dutch entrepreneur who developed a way to rid the oceans of its 5 trillion pieces of plastic litter!!!

Could you share your top 3 steps for someone to "green" their home or workspace that they could start on right away?

Yes!!!! With absolute pleasure!

Step #1: Eliminate toxins in your home/workplace and your body by replacing conventional cleaning products such as laundry detergent and softener, which are responsible for 80% of indoor air pollution (and chronic allergies, headaches, asthma, cancer...) with eco-friendly or homemade ones.

Step #2 Reduce or eliminate plastic. Replace disposable plastic bags, bottles, cups, containers, cutlery and straws with reusable shopping & produce bags, 18/10 food grade stainless steel bottles and coffee mugs, containers, cutlery and straws.

Step #3: Eliminate toxins in your body by replacing conventional personal-care products and cosmetics, which are 98% absorbed by your skin and lungs (causing hormonal imbalances, as well as chronic illnesses, allergies, headaches, asthma, and breast cancer...) with eco-friendly or homemade ones.

Note:

Not all 'green', 'organic', 'natural' or 'eco-friendly' products are always what they claim to be. Labeling laws in your country may not capture everything, and harmful chemicals may still be present in a product. Do your research and go for well-known 3rd party certified products to ensure their safety, for you and the planet!
